This study reviews the most famous classifications of formulaic sequences abroad and home. The most popular category classifies formulaic sequences as polywords, institutionalized expressions, phrasal constraints and sentences builders. Then researches by Chinese scholars on formulaic sequences are briefly reviewed. The study also discusses the positive influence of accumulation of formulaic sequences on college English writing. The paper attempts to promote college English writing and provide a reference for teaching college English writing.
