The edible bird's nest(EBN) as a precious health food is a nest made from the saliva of swiftlets. With the increasing demand for EBN resources, comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the nutritional and medicinal value of EBN is very necessary. In this article we reviewed the research progress on the active contents and nutritional values of the EBN, including the potential for mitogenic response, EGF-like activity,anti-influenza virus,hemagglutination-inhibitory activity, etc. In the future, more scientific work should be on the separation and purification of important biologically active components.
