Unloading and relaxation is a common phenomenon when digging a huge underground cavern. The surrounding rock relaxation zone formed at air face has adverse influence on the stability of the underground cavern. Based on relevant theories of meso-damage mechanics, the paper simulates the dynamic value during the digging of rock mass and suggests numerical method that predicts the evolution of the relaxation zone of the underground cavern to offer scientific grounds for the proper evaluation of the stability of the cavern.
