R134a is the most widely used refrigerant in mobile air conditioning (AC) system, but it’s now being replaced. The research progress of the low GWP alternatives to R134a in mobile AC system, such as 1234yf, AC5, AC6 and R744, are introduced. The physical properties, system performances, material compatibility and safety performance of novel low GWP refrigerants will be introduced. In the progress of choosing the right refrigerant, environmental as well as economic effects should be taken into consideration to find the appropriate ones.
