“三统说”是董仲舒在借鉴五德终始说以及其他历史观的基础上，对历史发展规律、动力、法则等问题所进行的系统的归纳与总结，其立足于西汉社会发展的现实状况，不仅对历史如何发展等问题进行了解答，还以“白统”“赤统”“黑统”的相关度制作为标准，对王朝的更化与改制问题进行了规范，意在摒弃西周末年以来社会发展所积累下来的诸多弊病，为汉武帝的诸多改革举措提供理论上的保障，进而维护西汉王朝的大一统。

The theory of “Santong” is Dong Zhongshu’s systermatic induction and summary of the law, the motive force and the rule of the historical development with the idea of the cyclic movements of the Five Elements as well as his historical view for reference. Based on the reality of the social development of the Western Han Dynasty, Dong Zhongshu not only explained the issue of historical development but also standardized the replacement and reform of dynasties, taking the relative systems of “white unification”, “red unification”, and “black unification as standards to discard the disadvantages accumulated by the social development since the end of the Western Zhou Dynasty and offer theoretical suppot for many of Emperor Wu’s reform measures to uphold the unification of the Western Han Dynasty.
