Cipancuh dam, one of the oldest dams in Indonesia, is located on the Cipancuh River, in the district of Indramayu, West Java Province, Indonesia. As an old dam, it faces deterioration due to climatic conditions, both of the embankment and the appurtenant structure. Another important thing to note is the extreme changes in flow characteristics due to changes in the condition of the catchment area. Based on the calculation of the rate of sediment, predicted age of the dam is still 81 years from now. So the existence of this dam must be maintained. However, downstream of the dam, there is a small town with a population of around 200 000 people whose safety is threatened if the dam is not managed properly. Based on the study, Cipancuh Dam is classified as a very high hazard dam. The activities undertaken to maintain the ex?istence of this dam are:repair the dam body, repair buildings complement, provide additional spillway ca?pacity, and installation of a new monitoring instrument, as well as enhanced monitoring by utilizing avail?able technology. So, it is necessary to improve the capability of the dam as well improve the safety of dam.
