The characteristics and performance of shipboard laser weapons are discussed, with focus on three types of lasers being developed by the U. S. Navy and Department of Defense:fiber solid‐state lasers, slab solid‐state lasers and free electron lasers. The challenges encountered during the development of shipboard laser weapons are analyzed, the overall con‐cept of the future development of the U. S. Navy is described, and the prospects of shipboard laser weapons are predicted.
