杭州拥有全国第一家独立学院的典范，具有一所全国第一批正规的民办高校，存在一所全国第一批招收空中乘务专业的职业技术学院，这三个“全国第一”，从一个侧面反映了杭州民办教育的特点。产生这三个“全国第一”的主要原因有：发达的经济状况支撑杭州民办教育迅速发展，位于杭州的浙江各个公办名牌大学为民办院校提供了强有力的师资队伍，浙江省、杭州市教育主管部门对民办教育的优惠政策及行政上的大力支持等因素，这是推动杭州民办教育迅速发展的重要原因。
