Based on the results of the 7 th and 8 th national forest inventories,a thematic analysis was con-ducted on forest situation of sparse and dense forests. The results showed that the ration of sparse and dense forests account for 1/3 of the area of high forest, mainly distributed in natural forests, during the in-terval of inventories,a slight increase of the area of dense forest occurred, but the area of sparse forest re-mained stable;natural growth is the main reason leading to dense in natural forest, logging and forest dis-asters were the main reason for sparse forest. The problem of sparse and dense forests is urgent, which needs to strengthen forest management, improve forest structure and heighten forest quality.Aimed at the different reasons of sparse and dense forests, integrated consideration should be given to such factors as site conditions, land cover, origin, forest characteristics, age and growth conditions, countermeasures like intermediate cutting, complementary planting, closing hillsides to facilitate afforestation, logging regenera-tion and protection so as to strengthen forest management.
