《金瓶梅》的主题应是对人性特别是人性之恶的现形式观照和解剖。作者以“人”为本，由“性”切入，全景式展现以西门庆为首的各式人物的日常情欲生活，或浓妆，或淡抹，或明说，或暗喻，举重若轻地完成了对“人”被永不餍足的欲望所驱使走向毁灭的整个悲剧人生的审丑叙事，并蕴含了作者“生聚死散，因果轮回”的悲天悯人佛道思想，从而完成了对人性的一种特别的“立此存照”：看似有“色”却是空，道是无“情”却有情。
