从南阳出土的彭伯壶铭可确知，两周之际有一个彭国。学者已经指出，《左传》哀公十七年记载之彭仲爽当来自考古揭示的南阳春秋彭氏家族墓地之家族。“申俘”即申国俘虏，彭仲爽很可能是申国与彭国交战或申国灭亡彭国时所俘。可能，亡国后之彭氏家族被迁往今南阳之申国。楚灭申国联合了彭氏家族，治理申县和对外扩张又得到彭氏家族的支持。

The inscriptions on Peng’s kettle unearthed in Nanyang clarifies the existence of the kingdom Peng between the West Zhou and East Zhou. Scholars pointed out that Peng Zhongshuang recorded in The Commentary of Zuo came from the family uncovered in Nanyang, who was very likely to be captured in the wars between Kingdoms Shen and Peng, and whose family members moved to Shen, where Nanyang is located now. Chu wiped out Shen later and united Peng’s family to govern the place.
