Contemporary Taiwanese writer Chou Hsiao-Hung, in a writing career that spans more than half a century, has not only rendered a profound portrait of how the lower to middle level masses, having dispersed from the mainland to Taiwan in the mid-1950s, live their drifting lives in those turbulent years, but has also showed how they have contributed to Taiwan with all their passionate blood while concerning themselves with the native soil, with their loved ones, on the other side of the Strait, as well as their inner desire for a reunion with them. His work is a unique epitome of dispersal and reunion, and fighting and reconciliation between the people on either side of the Strait for over half a century.
