《继承者》是英国作家威廉·戈尔丁（William Golding）的代表作之一，该小说主要描写了人类祖先尼安德特尔人的生活及其和更有智慧的“新人”之间的接触和冲突，从而对人类的文明继承有了更深层次的理解和思考。文章运用系统功能语言学中的及物性系统中的六大过程，即物质过程、心理过程、关系过程、行为过程、言语过程和存在过程，对小说选段进行分析，得出小说文字背后暗含的深层含义，即作者威廉·戈尔丁对人类文明继承的批判性态度。

The Inheritors is one of the representative novels written by the famous English writer—William Golding. The novel is mainly about the conflicts between two different tribes: Neanderthals and the new people. Among them, the Neanderthals are primitive and kind just like the ancestor of mankind, while the new people are more intelligent and cruel. By contrast, the author doubts the problem of inheritance of mankind. The paper analyzes the novel with the six process of transitive system in the systemic functional lin-guistics, including material process, psychological process, relationship, behavior, language and existing process. Through analyzing selections of the novel, the implied meaning behind the novel is clear, that is, William Golding’s attitude towards the inheritance of human civilization.
