比是《诗经》中常用的表现手法之一，象征是楚辞创作的一大特色。比和象征都要求喻体或象征物与被喻事物或被象征物之间有某种相似的特点，从而可以引起由此及彼的联想。但比一般以现实主义为根基，更多的是理性思维的结果。象征较比的思维机制更古老，更接近原始宗教狂热阶段，也更具浪漫色彩。《诗经》有礼乐文化的影子，楚辞受巫风影响更明显。楚辞中的象征与《诗经》中的比的关系不是承继关系，而是源各有自。

Bi is a common technique of expression in The Book of Poetry;symbolism is a major writing feature in Elegies of The South. Both Bi and symbolism require a certain resemblance between the target and vehicle or the symbol and symbolized object, thus people can associate one thing with another. Bi is usually based on realism, an output of rational thought;while symbolism, a product of a more ancient thinking mechanism much closer to an enthu-siastic stage of primitive religion, is more romantic. In The Book of Poetry, Rites&Music culture can be perceived, while in Elegies of The South, witch culture is more obviously manifested. Symbolism in Elegies of The South is not an inheritance from Bi in The Book of Poetry, instead they both have their own origins.
