原油在集输储运过程中会由于蒸发而损失一部分轻质组分，造成天然气资源的浪费的同时，还对大气环境造成污染。如果对这些组份加以回收，不仅减增加了油田天然气产量，又减少了能源浪费；防止了油罐顶挥发出天然气对大气的污染，保护了环境；同时减少了油罐区火灾危险因素，增加了油气集输的安全性。
