祭文是为祭悼死者而作，抒哀泄愤，感情沉痛，真切深入地表现作者的真实感受，具有震撼人心的情感力量和艺术魅力。苏轼有祭文44篇，内制祭文14篇，哀词6篇。这些祭文创作或为至亲椎天抢地，或为友人唏嘘叹惋，或为恩师痛贯心膂，或为无名枯骨伤吊绵绵；善于驰骋笔触，将叙事、抒情和议论自然融合，情挚意浓、技巧娴熟、独具风神，具有很强的艺术感染力。

An elegy, be it mournful or indignant , melancholic or plaintive , is a funeral song or a lament for the dead , which voices the author ’ s genuine sentiments , hence achieving its touching power and artistic charm.Su Shi(1037-1101) composed 44 funeral orations, 14 articles mourning over officials from the em-peror and 8 laments, among which, some lamented the loss of close kins , some grieving over dead friends, some mourning for the death of beloved teachers , and even some offering condolences to the unknown dead .A perfect integration of narration , lyric and commentaries, the elegies enjoyed artistic charm , in that they dis-played genuine feelings , adept skills and unique verve .
