《新华字典》是新中国成立后出版的第一部以白话释义、用白话举例的字典，也是迄今最有影响、最权威的一部小型汉语字典。它对中国的文化教育事业有极为深远的影响，对普及全民族的文化知识做出了重要贡献。从通俗性与实用性角度探讨《新华字典》第10版(2004年版)的部分释文。

Xinhua Dictio nary is the first dictionary published after the founding of the People's Republic of China, is the first dictionary explained in vernacular, in which examples are given in vernacular, as well. And it is also the most influential and authoritative one so far. Xinhua Dictionary has a great effect on the culture and education cause of China. In addition, it makes great contributions to the popularity of the whole nation's culture knowledge. The paper here discusses about some explanations of words in the tenth Xinhua Dictionary (2004 edition).
