I argue that problem solving , analogizing , modeling , reasoning causally , and arguing are the most powerful modes of thinking that lead to the most meaningful learning . These are the most cognitively engaging and epistemically productive learning activities that students may complete . T his paper has synthesized w hat I believe to be the most important cognitive processes that lead to the most meaningful learning . Learning that is problem‐focused necessarily engages deeper processing of information and results in more meaningful kinds of knowledge . In order to enhance learning to solve problems , learning environments should support productive thinking .
