The paper mainly summarized the development process of the Internet of Things in US and EU and also gave a general understanding of the policy documents related to the Internet of Things including“the Internet of Things- An action plan for Europe”. Then it put emphasis on the case studies of City Sense and MARVIN in US, environmental protection application projects like OSIRIS in Spain, Sensaris in France and Water Pollution Management and Early Warning System in Serbia. Based the general analysis on the application projects of Internet of Things in the field of the environmental protection in US and EU, it put forward the relevant suggestions for the development of Internet of Things on environmental protection in China.
