作为传统画家的刘海粟，其书法与绘画之间有很多联系，具有较为突出的艺术特点。刘海粟书法学颜、柳、张旭、米芾等，取诸家之长，又有所取舍，求浑厚古拙。其书法中笔法与其绘画中的线条相通，偏重篆书笔法，又受绘画笔墨的影响，在书法表现中具有丰富的墨趣，具有很高的艺术性。
작위전통화가적류해속，기서법여회화지간유흔다련계，구유교위돌출적예술특점。류해속서법학안、류、장욱、미비등，취제가지장，우유소취사，구혼후고졸。기서법중필법여기회화중적선조상통，편중전서필법，우수회화필묵적영향，재서법표현중구유봉부적묵취，구유흔고적예술성。
As a traditional artist.Liu Haisu’ s calligraphy had many connections with his paintings.It had some prominent artistic features.Liu Haisu modeled himself after Yan,Liu,Zhang Xu,Mi Fu and so on.He persued the thick and clumsy style by absorbing advantages of many other artists selectively. <br> His brushwork of the writing was linked with lines of the drawing.Liu Haisu preferred the seal character with the influence of the brushwork of work,and showed the rich interesting of ink in calligraphy.So,his cal-ligraphy works were full of artistic qualities.
