分布式计算源于并行计算。并行计算是同时使用多种计算资源，执行多个指令，协同解决大规模计算问题的过程。分布式计算是把一个需要巨大计算能力才能解决的问题分解成许多小的部分，然后，将其分配给许多计算机去处理，最后，把这些计算结果综合起来以服务用户。采用分布式计算的工作方式，其可用性和系统容错能力明显提高。在地理国情普查中，对地表覆盖影像分割时，利用分布式计算技术，既可提高分割的正确率，又可提高分割速度。利用分布式计算方法，还可以更好地解决地理国情大数据存储和文件处理，以及动态调整、协议和应用接口访问等诸多服务问题。
