李锐的《厚土》聚焦吕梁山，借助民俗纠葛，展现民众的生存困境。《厚土》民俗纠葛情节的运用注重地域性与普泛性，往往把地域、时代的特性与人性、传统文化的共性相结合。《厚土》在构建故事、塑造人物，展现民间生活时采用了情感叙事和生存叙事两种叙事策略，并且共同构成了李锐创作的完整叙事体系———生命叙事。李锐借助民俗纠葛情节，实现以上叙事策略的同时，始终不忘对底层人物的生存、命运、人性、文化的深切反思，使作品具有突破地域的文学永恒价值。
