In this paper, the patents on diamond or diamond-like carbon film manufactured by chemical vapor deposition (CVD)are analyzed. The time distribution and the spatial distribution of patent applications, the preparation method, applicant types and the improvement direction of the technology are analyzed. The research infers that Japan and USA are absolutely at the leading position in this field. In recent years, domestic researchers have got great improvements and the gap between foreign and domestic technology becomes narrower and narrower. The main direction of diamond film research is the mass production of high quality diamond film whose structure, thickness and size are under control. The application fields, such as cutting and wear parts, are the hot spots of application.
