《十二时普劝四众依教修行》已发现的6个写本可分作3个抄写系统,分别抄写于公元891到924年之间;它的创作时间在885年闰三月至891年正月八日之间;它的作者并非学界所一贯认定的智严,智严只是它的传播者,其作者不可考。它是具有宣传性质的文学作品,敦煌文学中还有若干同类作品,可视作一种部类。

The six manuscripts of Shiershi Puquan Sizong Yijiaoxiuxing among the Dunhuang documents can be divided into three transcription systems respectively transcribed from 891 to 924 CE. The text was written between the leap-year march of 885 and January 8 of 891. Zhiyan, who is generally considered to be the author of this text, is just its disseminator;the true author remaining unknown. This is one of many literary works used for purposes of cultural promotion, which can be regarded as a category of Dunhuang literature.
