坚持可持续发展的生态畜牧业是湖州畜牧业发展推进生态文明，抓住机遇加快发展的重要措施，是湖州建设绿色环保经济强市、生态园林城市发展的重要战略。湖州畜牧业要抢抓机遇，适度加快湖羊等草食畜禽发展，合理规划生猪存栏数目，防治环境污染，把生态环境保护同发展生态畜牧业有机地结合起来，从而极大地促进农牧民增收、社会经济协调发展，实现湖州市经济可持续发展，城市和乡村更加美丽宜居的重要战略构想。
