杨争光其前期创作的一系列乡土和民间题材小说作品，强有力地牵动了评论家的批评视线和读者的阅读视线，小说被认为“融入自己的思考”，一个重要原因就在于它们明显地体现出“非文化”特征：以作为文化主体的人为表现对象的小说，表现出的却是“非文化”特征。具体来说，小说通过作家创作的“非文化”立场、人性呈现的“非文化”指涉、悲剧色彩的“非文化”意蕴等，呈现出“非文化”特征。
