常宁方言中知二、庄组字与知三、章组字分立；精组洪音字与知二、庄合流，精组三等字颚化；知三、章组字大部分读舌面塞音，在前高元音前与精组细音字合并，在舌尖前元音前与知二、庄组字合流；见组细音字与知三、章组字合流，在前高元音前与精组细音字合流。常宁方言中舌面塞音的出现是后起的，是为保持二、三等韵分立的一种手段，见组细音字与知三、章组字合流是尖团分立的结果。
상저방언중지이、장조자여지삼、장조자분립；정조홍음자여지이、장합류，정조삼등자악화；지삼、장조자대부분독설면새음，재전고원음전여정조세음자합병，재설첨전원음전여지이、장조자합류；견조세음자여지삼、장조자합류，재전고원음전여정조세음자합류。상저방언중설면새음적출현시후기적，시위보지이、삼등운분립적일충수단，견조세음자여지삼、장조자합류시첨단분립적결과。
In Changning Dialect, the values of Initials Zhi with degree two are opposite to Zhi and Zhang with degree three;Initials Jing with degree one and two amalgamate with Zhi with degree two and Zhuang, while degree three of Jing palatalize; most characters of Zhi and Zhang with degree three become palatal stops, however, merge into Jing with degree three and four prior to high front vowel while amalgamate with Zhi and Zhuang with degree two before apical vowels; Initial Jian with three and four degree mixes with Zhi and Zhang with degree three and amalgamates with Jing before high front vowels. the history of the apperance of palatal stops in Changning Dialect is not long, due to keeping the opposition of the values of degree two to three ,and the combination of Jian with degree three and four attributes to the opposition of apical vowels to palatalized ones.
