The register of the Chinese character“得” (“dei”) has always been between spoken Chinese and written Chinese. This paper focuses on the study of the character “dei” in terms of its etymology and history, its syntax functions in making up phrases and sentences, the specificity of its usage as well as its negation based upon the comparative analysis of the related linguistic data. Then the uniqueness of the Chinese character“得” (“dei”) is discovered, which is of striking significance to the comprehensive study of the character“dei” itself.
