宗炳是庐山慧远的俗家弟子，他继承并发展了慧远的神不灭论思想，作《神不灭论》一文阐释其观点及理论依据。宗炳结合当时佛教义学的核心内容，具体阐明了神、心、识、情等概念及其相互关系，从神不灭推出了人必成佛的结论。他认为每个人都有识神，在未成佛之前识神处于染的状态，修行就是澄净识神的过程。当人的识神完全清净时便是涅槃的状态。既然人人都有不灭的识神，并最终可以通过修行使识神澄净，这就意味着人人都可以成佛。这一思想与涅槃佛性思想是一致的。
