Objective To understand any possible correlation of serum interleukin-15 (interleukin-15,IL-15) level to knee osteoarthritis ( OA) patients.Method 102 OA patients were chosen to be the experimental group and 54 healthy were chosen to be the control group. Serum IL-15 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The radiographic disease severity of OA was assessed by Kellgren-Lawrence ( KL) grading system. The data obtained were then subjected to statistical analysis.Findings The serum IL-15 levels of the KL2 level, KL3 level, and KL4 level patients in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P<0.05).The levels of serum IL-15 were found to be positively correlated with KL grading scores in the experimental group (r=0.433, P<0.01).Conclusion Serum IL-15 levels were associated with radiographic disease severity of OA patients. These results demonstrated that IL-15 might serve as a potential indicator of the severity and progression of knee OA.
