作为著名的美国当代华裔作家,叶祥添( Laurence Yep )一生作品无数,尤以儿童文学作品而闻名遐迩。其金山系列小说中最新一部作品《丝之龙》( Dragons of Silk ,2011)主要讲述了一户广东客家人的五代人的生活经历。笔者以该小说为史料来探寻其中暗含的家庭本位观。作者以新历史主义为理论基础,以比较文学形象学为研究方法,将小说中五代人的人物关系串联起来组成一张家族图谱来解析这个历经170多年风雨、横跨大洋两岸家族的每一代成员的生活经历,从而揭示这个家族是一直秉承着“家庭本位”的中国传统,通过这样的揭示来点明:作为一名土生第三代美籍华裔,叶祥添对“自我”文化的否定和对“他者”文化的亲善态度。

As a prolific c ontemporary Chinese-American writer , Laurence Yep is best known for children ’ s books . The writer chooses Dragons of Silk , the latest novel from Laurence Yep ’ s Golden Mountain Chronicles , as the object to explore“family orientation” implied in it . The novel mainly describes the life of a Hakka family living in Guangdong Province . It consists of five parts while each of them depicts the life and experiences of a generation . Based on New Historicism and Imagology of Comparative Literature , the author attempts to build connections among the characters of the novel and makes up a family tree whose history is over 170 years to analyze the daily life of every member at home and abroad . All the attempts are made to reveal that “family orientation ,” the ancient Chinese tradition , has always been inherited by members of each generation of the family . In this way , it lets people know Laurence Yep , a native third -generation Chinese -American , maintains a negative attitude about “the self” and a positive attitude about “the other .”
