“元以曲取士”的观点最早见于沈德符的《万历野获编》，臧懋循的《元曲选·序》中对它进行了更详细的说明，并获得了明代部分曲学家的赞同。但是《四库全书总目提要》等官方著作否定了这个观点，后人也多认为“元以曲取士”是晚明文人要提高杂剧地位而做出的攀附言论，是一则历史流言。这种流言形成的原因是多方面的，文学革新与复古的进程、元杂剧文体上的特殊性和晚明曲学家们无奈心态的角度都可能直接或间接地促进了该命题的流传，探讨相关原因也可以了解杂剧在明代的地位及演变过程。

The point of Selecting Officials by Music in the Yuan Dynasty has been discovered in Shen Defoe's Private Gleanings of the Wanli Reign firstly. Zang Maoxun has a more detailed explanation in the preface of Anthology of Yuan Plays,and many dramatists in Ming Dynasty agree with this point. But lots of official books don't agree with it, such as An Annotated Full List of the Complete Library of Four Branches of Books. The people after Ming Dynasty thought the writers in later Ming Dynasty made this rumor to improve the status of poetic drama set to music. There are many immediate or indirect reasons for this rumor, such as the renovation and restore ancient ways of the literature;the special style of the poetic drama set to music and the sad mentality of the dramatists in Ming Dynasty. These reasons can also help to know the status and evolve processes of dramas in Ming Dynasty.
