简·奥斯丁和海伦菲尔丁分别是英国19世纪和20世纪杰出的女性作家，她们的代表作《傲慢与偏见》和《布丽姬特·琼斯的单身日记》自出版以来受到了广大读者的支持与好评。特别是为女性读者打开了一扇心灵的窗户。本文将这两部著名小说进行比较是因为它们在内容情节上十分相似，但是在女主人公刻画上分别体现了19世纪女性和当代女性的不同特点，很具有代表性。本文采用了比较分析的方法，分析了两篇小说在情节和人物上的相同点以及在社会背景，女主人公塑造和她们的婚姻观和爱情观上的不同点，体现了19世纪的女性和当代女性在社会地位、工作、教育以及婚姻观念上的差异。结果表明：19世纪的女性思想保守，在物质和精神两个方面完全依附于男性，没有追求爱情和婚姻的自由和勇气；而当代女性则有接受教育的权利，可以参加工作，在物质和精神上更加独立，勇于追求爱情。

Jane Austen and Helen Fielding are remarkable female writers in the 19th-century and 20th-century English literature respectively. Their reprezenta-tive worksPride and Prejudice and Brid-get Jones's Diaryhave been enjoying a big support and favorable reception since their publication. Particularly, they have opened the spiritual window of a great number of women readers. The reason why the author of the thesis compare the two novels is that there are quite amount of similarities between the two works in plot. However, in terms of the creation of the heroines, the novels depict two typical fe-male figures in 19th century and in the present age respectively. Through compari-son and analysis of the two novels, there can be found some similarities in plots and characters, and some differences in social background, the creation of heroin es and their attitude to love and marriage, which shows the difference between attitude of women in 19th century and in contemporary age in terms of their social status,work,ed-ucation and marriage. In conclusion, the study suggests that women in 19th century are more conservative, mainly relying on men both materially and mentally, lacking courage of pursuing love and m arriage, while present women have the right to re-ceive education and having professions, being more independent materially and spiritually and being more brave in pursu-ing love.
