This paper introduces the causes, characteristics and treatment strategies of rare diseases and describes the related policies and measures of orphan drugs in developed countries and brielfy summaries the present situation of orphan drugs and rare diseases in China. Some suggestions on promoting the development of orphan drug policy in China are also proposed so as to provide a reference for the decisions of national authorities and promote the implementation of orphan drug management system in China.
