《南华通》仅选《庄子》内篇，合注疏与评点为一体。在义理上，沿袭了自宋以来“以儒解庄”的倾向，以孔孟程朱之理通之。在体例上，受评点之学，尤其是明代以来时文评点的影响，以时文之法评点“七篇”，注重文章的前呼后应和起承转合，每有精彩评点，颇能发庄文之幽微。该书还提出“部如一篇，篇如一章，且如一句”的观点，又指出“‘虚’字是庄子一生本领”，都堪称亮点，颇有见地。

A General Discussion of Nanhua Scripture annotates and comments The Inner Chapters of Zhuangzi.In principle ,it explains The Inner Chapters by means of the principles of Confucious ,Mencius ,Cheng Hao and Zhu Xi , following the trend of interpreting Zhuangzi with Confucianism .Influenced by the commentaries after Ming Dynasty , it comments the Seven Chapters in detail ,emphasizing coherence ,opening ,development ,transition and conclusion of the text.The book put forward the view that a volume can be analyzed from a book ,a book from a chapter ,and a chapter from a sentence and holds that vacuity is the core of Zhuangzi ,Which is the highlight of the book and has his own understanding .
