Tennessee Williams is one of the most prominent playwrights in United States after World War II. A Streetcar Named Desire is one his most influential works. Blanche Dubois, a fading, though still attractive Southern belle, is the heroine in the play. Though the a-ristocratic identity brought her elegant manners, she became rather lonely inside under the influences of the industrial social environ-ment. In addition, the decline of the estate made her personality increasingly complicated and distorted. All of these lead to Blanche’ s great tragedy. Based on such understanding of A Streetcar Named Desire, this paper tries to analyze Blanche’ s tragedy in the play, and further explore the roots of her tragic fate.
