Editor’s Commentary:Thomas C. Reeves is a professor emeritus of learning, design, and technology at the University of Georgia. Since receiving his Ph.D. at Syracuse university, he has designed, developed and evaluated numerous interactive learning programs for education, training, and performance support. Professor Reeves is a past president of the Association for the Development of Computer-based Instructional Systems (ADCIS) and a former Fulbright Lecturer. He was selected as one of the“Top 100”people by Multimedia Producer magazine in 1995, also, the editor of the Journal of Interactive Learning Research during 1997-2000. He was a member of the Scientiifc Panel on Interactive Consumer Health Information for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and served as a member of the National Visiting Committee for the NSDL (http://nsdl.org/). In 2003, he received the AACE Fellowship Award from the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education. His Interactive Learning Systems Evaluation book (co-authored with John Hedberg) was also published in 2003. In this interview, Thomas C. Reeves shares his unique perspective on educational technology, especially in the area of authentic learning. His authentic tasks model in web-based learning, which was developed with Ron Oliver and Jan Herrington for the Australian Research Council. This model is illustrated with a course designed for Master students at Edith Cowen University. He encourages the educational community to explore new learning technologies and authentic activities, and to work with instructional designers in applications of alternative pedagogies and learning evaluation. He offers an optimistic outlook in the development of educational technology.
