国家主权观念是近代国际社会公认的处理国与国之间关系的根本原则。曾纪泽通过学习与外交实践，形成了国家主权观念，主要内容涉及：主张修约、废约，限制和取消列强在华特权；通过外交谈判，维护国家权益；重视保护海外华侨权益；坚持外交平等原则，加强中西交往。由于时代与阶级的局限，曾纪泽尽管对国家主权观念的认识与运用存在某些不足，但其所具有的国家主权观念丰富了中国外交理论，对中国外交近代化产生了重要影响。

The concept of national sovereignty is a fundamental principle for handling the relationship between nations universally accepted by modern international community. Zeng developed his conception of national sovereignty through studying and diplomatic practice. His conception mainly involves amending and abrogating treaties,restricting and abolishing the imperialist powers’privileges in China,defending the nation’s rights, emphasizing the rights of nationals abroad,insisting upon the principle of national equality in diplomatic practices,and intensifying China’s relation with the west. Due to the limitation of the era and the social class of which he is a member,there were some deficiencies in his conception in epistemological dimension and practices. However,it enriched the theory of Chinese diplomacy and had a far - reaching impact on modern Chinese diplomacy.
