The gob area has a huge impact on surface stability, how to accurately determine the impact of the gob area on the surface stability has become an important subject. In this paper, the stability of the overlying strata and the residual deformation of the gob area were calculated through the project example and by using the analytical method, and evaluation was carried out on the stability of the ground surface according to the calculated results. Meanwhile, calculation was conducted on the impact degree of the gob area by numerical simulation. The differences of the calculated results obtained by both analytical method and numerical simulation method were compared and the causes of the difference generation were analyzed, all of these provided a quick method for evaluating the surface stability of the gob area in the coal mine.
