长揖是腿不弯曲而站着行礼的,即拱手至额然后弯腰而下手及地,由于腰的尽可能弯曲,使拱手的幅度从最上的前额到最下的地面,恰似一人的长度,因而把这种礼节叫“长揖”。长揖是位卑者向位尊者行的仅次于跪拜礼的一种礼节,表达了位卑者对位尊者不附炎趋势的态度。

장읍시퇴불만곡이참착행례적,즉공수지액연후만요이하수급지,유우요적진가능만곡,사공수적폭도종최상적전액도최하적지면,흡사일인적장도,인이파저충례절규“장읍”。장읍시위비자향위존자행적부차우궤배례적일충례절,표체료위비자대위존자불부염추세적태도。
The“changyi”is a form of salute the gesture of which is standing on the straight legs and holding the clasped hands up in front of the forehead, and then bowing as deep as possible while stretching the clasped hands down to the ground;because in this salute, the hands move from the highest point, which is the forehead, to the lowest point, which is the ground, the distance between which is roughly exact the height (length) of the saluter, this salute form is called“changyi (lit. length bowing:bowing with clasped hands moving the full length of a person)”. Changyi is the salute made by a person of lower standing to a person of higher standing only second to kneeling salute, showing the attitude of being neither naughty nor humble of a person of lower standing to a person of higher standing.
