An epitome of innovative university,the University of Waterloo has unique institution and culture underpinning innovation. Firstly,its internal-external governance structure makes possible its creative response to social needs and safeguards its education autonomy and authority. The tenure system provides academic freedom to the faculty. These factors contribute to innovation. Secondly,by strengthening the top-level design of the co-op model that connects work and study and by streamlining counseling and communication,the university has established an inter-connected education eco-system that is conducive to the development of the innovative type of professionals,student entrepreneurship,the formulation of sound development strategies,organizational restructuring,decision making,platform building,and the maintenance of a desirable community. Thirdly,the international education strategy of the university also promotes its innovation thanks to its quality international students,programs with international dimensions,international faculty and staff,international research network and the industrial realization of research findings and patents. Finally,the university has established a unique“inventor-owned”intellectual property policy,the trinity of industry-education-research,and a research and technology park involving diversified resources to encourage entrepreneurship;hence the great number of hi-tech enterprises.
