Widely distributed in Middle East and North Africa, the oil shale is one of the most abundant resources in the world. As the only one whose oil shale reserve volume exceeds 1 billion tons in Middle East, Jordan which obtains plenty of exploitable oil shale resources in its middle and northwestern parts has significantly signed contracts with several internationally recognized oil shale exploration and development corporations, such as Shell and Estonian Enefit. However, conventional development methods are reasons for high costs due to various limitations. Based on the distribution of oil shale resources and geological situations in Jordan, more and more operating companies have accepted downhole in situ exploitation methods instead of conventional surface direct exploitation methods.
