西方文学中的中国形象是一道瑰丽的景观。英国作家毛姆的小说《面纱》中有大量对于中国的描写，作品表现的中国形象既是贫穷落后的殖民地，又是使人净化心灵的世外桃源形象，具有矛盾性。本文将运用形象学和后殖民主义的理论，对《面纱》中这一矛盾的中国形象进行具体分析，并进而探究形成这种形象的原因，揭示西方文学建构中国形象的原型特征。

The Chinese image in Western literature is a magnificent landscape .There are a lot of descrip-tions of Chinese image in the British writer Maugham's novel The Painted Veil .The novel shows a contradic-tory Chinese image which is both a colony poor and backward and a place which can purify one's mind .This thesis will use the theories of Imageology and Post-colonialism to analyze the contradictory image in The Painted V eil concretely ,exploring the reasons and uncovering the prototype of the Chinese image in Western literature .
