Permeable reactive barrier(PRB) is one of the innovative technologies as an alternative to the"pump and treat"for in situ remediation of groundwater. In practice, a variety of packing materials have been em-ployed in permeable reactive barrier to remove contaminants such as heavy meatls, BTEX, halogenated hydrocar-bons, aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, inorganic anions and so on, through adsorption, precipitation, redox, bio-logical degradation and some other processes. The structure, contaminants-removing mechanism, merits and limi-tations of PRB and application of active packing materials were summarized with the research progress of the said technology introduced in detail also. It was pointed out that, although PRB technology had been wildely acknowl-edged, its long-term performance should be proved through practice.
