Based on the display and analysis of linear elements , linear referencing is a method of spatial referencing that can solve the problem of dynamic display and analysis using linear elements .This article discusses how this method of expressing location , in which the locations of features are described in terms of measurement along a linear element instead of pairs of coordinates , is put into use in the route selection of oil and gas transmission pipelines , and how it helps to locate the spatial position of stakes and pipelines as well as marks in the process of geographical survey .
