在20世纪早期，天津旅行指南作为一种特殊的消费品，不仅满足着人们旅行的实际需要，也在一定程度上反映了城市空间的变动和社会发展的状况。城市公共空间的变动既意味着城市生活的丰富、城市功能的增加，又带动了空间内部运行规则、权力关系的转变。在外国势力、地方政府和社会精英的交互作用和影响下，火车、汽车、有轨电车等新式交通工具纷纷采用，城市娱乐日渐繁荣，公园、游戏场、茶园、戏院、电影院等逐渐普及，新式学堂、报馆、出版、印刷机构先后建立。涉及城市公共空间管理的各种法律、法规亦应运而生。旅行指南对相关法规的介绍，不仅反映出20世纪早期公共空间扩大之后、天津城市管理所面临的压力，也透露出天津社会精英在公共空间秩序建构过程中的某些愿望和要求。近代天津城市公共空间由于具有明显的时代特征和强烈的开放性，因此充斥着国族、阶层、文化间的矛盾、冲突。借助旅行指南及游人和城市居民的亲身观察和体验，我们可以加深对天津、乃至近代中国城市公共空间的复杂性的认识和理解。
