Gothic novels enjoyed enormous popularity in the 20th century American literary field, which provided a source of inspiration for William Faulkner, who was a leading figure in the southern literature, to write down one of his biggest hits A Rose for Emily. This article explores the distorted and alienated female identity in A Rose for Emily from the perspective of female gothic and subsequently discusses the causes of Emily's tragedy.
