关于锡林郭勒杂岩,前人有两种相异观点[1-4],一种认为,它是由深成岩体受剪切作用变形变质而形成的正变质岩,其形成于早古生代;另一种认为它是由碎屑岩-火山岩经过区域动力变质作用形成的副变质岩,时代属于前寒武。本文通过研究认为锡林郭勒杂岩之中各类岩石具有相同的变质变形特征,互层关系稳定,是一套连续的岩层,原岩应为滨浅海碎屑沉积夹基性、中基性火山岩建造。锡林郭勒杂岩的变质年龄揭示了一次重要构造运动,标志着华北板块北缘结束元古代陆缘发育进入古生代发展。
