经济全球化和世界经济一体化加速了全球集装箱运输网络化的形成。干线运输和大型枢纽港的出现，以及航运技术的不断发展，集装箱船大型化的趋势日益明显。船舶大型化带动货量持续增加，对于港口的基础设施以及内陆土地资源的要求也大大提高。上海港与国外先进港口硬件设施基本相当，上海作为全国经济中心，以及自贸区推行的沿海捎带业务，都极大强化了上海港集装箱中转业务。与此同时，上海港受港口自然条件、相关技术规范以及目前建设滞后等诸多原因的影响，港口在泊位大型化方面目前还未能与集装箱船舶大型化发展保持同步。上海港必须加强与航运企业、货主、最终需求终端的合作，加大与长江流域的内河港口以及沿海地区中小型港口的合作力度，形成一个有层次、有分工的航运网络，集中力量将上海港打造成国际枢纽港，成为上海自贸区建设的有力推手。
