The message of emperor Yongle’ s death triggered a series of political and ritual responding activities in Joseon Dynasty, which vividly reflect the operational codes of Joseon as a tributary state in dealing with the Ming Dynasty. Following traditional Chinese ritual rules with clear cultural consciousness, the Joseon court held a remote funeral ceremony for emperor Yongle. Meanwhile, all related activities were also taken under cautious political considerations of serving the superior power. The official message of emperor Yongle’ s death reached Joseon significantly later than the date Joseon actually obtained the news, which suggests that the information communication between the two governments were not effective. The record of Annals of the Joseon Dynasty about emperor Yongle’ s death,as well as some other events of the Ming palace, are not necessarily more accurate than the record from the Ming side. Therefore the usage of those materials requires equal cautious critical examination. Early Ming emperors frequently required virgin maids from Joseon and forced court women to sacrifice their life for emperors’ death ceremony. These practices suggest that there were remains of slavery system existed in the imperial times especially in high society. Although did its best to serve these request, the Joseon court officials actually despised those practices.
